Trapped in Walls

January 21, 2013

As promised, here are some close-up shots of a few relief sculptures in Prambanan Temple in Central Java130120_Relief3

130120_Relief1130120_Relief4Relief is actually a sculptural term for chiselling away the background material to give the piece a raised effect.

You could just see the effort that went into this especially since the entire Prambanan complex was just covered with these. Whoa!

It is right? Considering they’ve been around since the 10th century!

In two of the stones in the top picture the figures look very happy all sitting together – are they Buddha figures? They’re rather lovely.

Hi! Prambanan is actually a Hindu temple. I’m not too sure but it seems to depict the story of Ramayana. :)
